Announcing the publication of Finally Focused!

I’m delighted to announce the publication of my book Finally Focused: The Breakthrough Treatment Plan for ADHD. I’ve written Finally Focused like a book-length prescription that provides health professionals, parents and patients with all the background information and practical guidelines they need to effectively treat ADHD.

As an integrative psychiatrist, I don’t limit myself to prescribing medications for ADHD. I look for and detect underlying causes of the disorder and I address those causes, using natural treatments first and medications only when necessary. If I prescribe medications, I do so with nutritional support that will minimize medication side effects.

I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment because it doesn’t work! Every person with ADHD – child, adolescent or adult-has a unique pattern of deficiencies and excesses. Correcting these deficiencies and excesses-adding what is needed and subtracting what isn’t-is the heart of the book: the Plus-Minus Healing Plan.

Having successfully treated thousands of people with ADHD using this Plus-Minus approach, I’m still frustrated that there are millions of people with ADHD who are searching for answers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11% of children ages 4 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD-more than six million kids. Another eight million adults have the disorder, with only about one in five treated.

Untreated, children with ADHD do poorly in school, with nearly 50% of ADHD kids being suspended at some point. They have more problems with their family and fewer friends. They’re relentlessly criticized for their behavior, and their self-esteem plummets.

Untreated, adolescents with ADHD tend to engage in risky behavior. Compared to their peers without ADHD, they’re more likely to smoke, use illegal drugs, drive recklessly and get into accidents, and have sex earlier. Thirty percent drop out of high school, compared to 10% of non-ADHD kids.

Untreated, adults with ADHD can be inattentive and distractible, and find it hard to get organized and on track. They often do poorly at work. They’re twice as likely to get separated or divorced from their spouses. They experience more anxiety and depression. And they’re more likely to be addicted to tobacco or illegal drugs.

I wrote Finally Focused to bring relief to as many people with ADHD as possible-and new insights and options to the health care professionals who treat ADHD.

Part I of the book is composed of the eleven elements of the Plus-Minus Healing Plan. All of the eleven treatments in my Plus-Minus Plan are simple and well-documented. Each treatment is followed by a “Step-by-Step Action Plan” that shows professionals and readers how to use the treatment, step-by-step. There’s nothing included in the Plus-Minus Plan that has failed to prove its effectiveness over three decades of treating children and adult ADHD. Part II includes unique guidance about medication and behavior therapy, the two main conventional treatments for ADHD.

    Hello! I don’t know if this will be read or responded to, so I’ll keep it short… I haven’t finished the book yet but can’t say enough good things about it! I’ve already shared with friends and Facebook groups, and reviewed on Amazon – it is EXACTLY what I have needed for years! I have a couple questions, though, on the section about probiotics (p. 90), you refer to the appendix to give the exact brand/dosage of S. boulardii – and I was unable to find that information. Also, in the section about casein and gluten (p.99), there is another reference to the “Full list of DPP-IV supplements in the Appendix at the end of the book.” All I can seem to find are two manufacturers for recommended supplements – is this what you are referring to? Or maybe I am missing a page in my book? Thank you in advance.

      Oh – one other question I forgot – referring to Magnesium, you recommended Natural Calm, however you also say that the best type is Magnesium Glycinate. I can’t find a Natural Calm that isn’t Magnesium Citrate – have they changed their formulation? And would you recommend another brand of Glycinate over Natural Calm?
